World NGO Day
SUVIDHA Celebrates World NGO Day With a Commitment to Empowering Change and Social Impact.
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a crucial role in addressing social, environmental and humanitarian issues worldwide. As the name suggests, NGOs operate independently, without any financial aid from the government. Driven by a commitment to provide social justice, equality, and sustainable development, these organizations play an important role in making government schemes more accessible to marginalized groups.
Considered to be the first NGO in the world, the Anti-Slavery Society was established in 1839. However, the first use of the term NGO dates back to 1945, with the creation of the United Nations. Since then, NGOs have proliferated globally, advocating for various causes and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.
Significance of NGOs:
NGOs are instrumental in driving positive change and filling gaps in public services. Established to work towards social welfare goals, they also advocate for policy changes. They play an important role in empowering communities to address pressing issues such as poverty, disparity, human rights violations, and environmental deprivation.
NGOs and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
NGOs are at the forefront of advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. They can make Governments and business enterprises accountable for the fulfilment of the SDG’s. They undertake this responsibility through grassroots initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and partnerships.
