Eradicating Poverty Sustainably - A Look into SDG 1 and SUVIDHA's Initiatives
The Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations member States in September 2015, is a blueprint for the world to unite against growing poverty, social inequality, deteriorating health conditions, illiteracy, climate change and environmental threats. At the forefront of these goals is SDG 1: the eradication of poverty in all its forms by 2030. This encompasses not only income poverty but also the lack of access to education, healthcare, clean water, and social inclusion.
Poverty is a complex and multidimensional issue that extends beyond mere financial deprivation. It robs individuals and communities of dignity, opportunity, and the ability to fully participate in society. Moreover, it renders them vulnerable to economic shocks, natural disasters, and social exclusion, perpetuating a cycle of deprivation and despair.
Despite significant progress over the years, poverty remains a daunting challenge globally. According to The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023, if the current trends persist, 575 million people will still live in extreme poverty by 2023, with only one third of the countries halving their national poverty levels. In India alone, 21.92% of the population lives below the national poverty line.
Addressing poverty requires a comprehensive approach involving governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations. Some key strategies include Social Protection Programs, Investing in Education and Healthcare, Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods and Building Resilience among the communities.
As an NGO, SUVIDHA is actively contributing to the achievement of SDG 1 by embracing a holistic development approach, providing innovative solutions and technological advancements to empower rural communities. These include precision agriculture, access to clean and affordable energy sources, digital and financial literacy, quality education for youth, skill development, and improved health facilities, as well as climate change mitigation strategies.
The organization's strategy focuses on empowering communities through knowledge dissemination, capacity building, and income-generating opportunities, ensuring the sustainability of livelihood initiatives in the long term. This comprehensive approach has led to tangible improvements in agricultural productivity and income for farmers, with enterprises developed to stimulate economic growth, particularly benefiting small and marginal farmers.
SUVIDHA places a special emphasis on women's empowerment, implementing various strategies such as nurturing self-help groups and providing skill development and vocational training. Climate change mitigation technologies have reduced women drudgery and improved their health and well-being, enabling them to participate more actively in economic activities. Additionally, the adoption of renewable energy has resulted in cost savings for communities, further contributing to poverty reduction and increased income. The brand "Gaon Originals" has emerged as a platform empowering rural farmers and artisans, making their products accessible to customers. The comprehensive approach has resulted in generation of over 300,000 man-days and revenue exceeding Rs. 5,00,00,000/-.
Looking ahead, SUVIDHA envisions playing a pivotal role in promoting global sustainability by empowering farmers through sustainable agricultural practices and clean energy solutions, with a particular focus on women's empowerment by 2030. These efforts are crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering the evolution of vulnerable groups towards greater prosperity and resilience.
